金岳霖有次碰到一句成语“吃一堑，长一智”，不知怎么翻译是好，便请教钱钟书。钟书几乎不假思索地脱口而出道：

先生不是在翻译，只是找到名头来创作吧。

原句出自诗人英国诗人西格夫里·萨松的《于我，过去，现在以及未来 》，由余光中老先生翻译。值得注意的是，余老先生将rose翻译成了蔷薇，而不是玫瑰，更不是月季。既完美的做到了“信达雅”这三个字，又使得这句话十分押韵，不得不让人佩服。

金岳霖当年翻译《毛泽东选集》，译到“吃一堑，长一智”时，一时下不了手。

钱钟书遂支招，译作：

A fall into the pit, a gain in your wit.

译文和中文一样对仗，而且押韵。

据说（未考证），当拿破仑战败，被流放到厄尔巴岛时，他对自己的医生说了这样一句回文(palindrome)：

Able was I ere I saw Elba.

这句话在翻译史上的各版本也是颇有趣味。最初钱歌川先生对此句的翻译是：「我在看到厄尔巴之前曾是强有力的」。但若是参考翻译标准「信达雅」，或许这种译法至多符合「信」与「达」。

不久，许渊冲先生提出了两种译法：「不见棺材不掉泪」「不到俄岛我不倒」。前一句是在对原句理解的基础上对整句进行了意译，而后句译文可谓出色，因为译者参考了原句的回文格式。虽然严格来讲，后句不属于回文，但已经很不错了。

后来，马红军先生也提出了两种译法，或许是迄今为止此句翻译的巅峰：

「落败孤岛孤败落

」

在遵守原意的同时，马红军先生成功地使用了回文的结构，真正达成了「信」「达」「雅」。

还有一些令人叹服的中英文神翻译：

杜甫的名句“无边落木萧萧下，不尽长江滚滚来”，曾被余光中看做无法翻译的诗句。“无边落木，‘木’后是‘萧萧 ’，是草字头，草也算木；不尽长江，‘江’后是‘滚滚’，也是三点水。这种字形，视觉上的冲击，无论你是怎样的翻译高手都没有办法的。”这句诗的翻译问题很典型，基本可以管窥在不同文化之间传达意境的难度。

余先生大概不知道，其时这句诗已经有“高手”翻译过了，而且还不止一个人。“萧萧下”是著名诗人卞之琳翻译的，三个字被译成 “shower by shower（一阵又一阵、纷纷洒落）”；而其余部分是他的学生许渊冲完成的，以“hour after hour（时时刻刻）”结尾，和卞译合辙押韵、珠联璧合。

无边落木萧萧下：The boundless forest sheds its leaves shower by shower；

不尽长江滚滚来：The endless river rolls its waves hour after hour.
