我们之前学习了很多地道的短语，今天咱们换个口味，学几个同义替换。严格来说，应该是「同近义替换」。因为很少会有一个单词与另一个单词完全相同的情况。

另一项重要提醒是，一定要注意语境，因为一个词常会有多个词义，使用范围很广。如果没有语境，呆呆地背诵单词的中文释义，大脑很可能因为面临巨大的记忆负担而干脆摆烂。语境能够起到约束作用，比如，a straightforward process 是「简单的过程」而非「坦率的过程」。好，我们把目光投向 2021 年 6 月的四级真题。

01 painstaking 勤奋的；细心的

painstaking = hardworking / diligent / industrious

In fact, acquiring the exact meaning of number words is a painstaking process that takes children years.

译文：事实上，掌握数词的确切含义是一个辛苦的过程，孩子们要花费数年时间才能完成。

表示「刻苦的」，hardworking 一词脱口而出。此外，我们还可以用 painstaking。虽然不是四六级、考研大纲词汇，但它在四六级、考研都出现过。

这个形容词用来表示 showing or done with great care and effort。 一方面，painstaking 可以形容人「刻 苦的，勤奋的」，比如， a painstaking student 「一位勤奋的学生」 ， months of painstaking research 「数月的苦心研究」。 不过在原文中，我们 如果把 a painstaking process 直译为「刻苦的过程」不合适，因为在汉语中，「刻苦 」多用来形容人，所以在这儿可意译为「需要下苦功的过程」，或简化为「辛苦的过程」。 在 2022 的《经济学人》中，作者用到了一模一样的搭配。

另一方面，它也可以形容工作、计划等「仔细的，一丝不苟的，精心的」。我们可以用它来替换 careful，thorough，meticulous 等。

The book describes the election process in painstaking detail.

这本书精心描写了选举的详细过程。

top-tier = ultimate 顶级的

top-tier = ultimate / leading / top

Many companies now look to these “ultimate professionals” to solve problems their full-time teams can’t. Or they save money by hiring “ top-tier experts” only for particular projects.

译文：现在许多公司要么找这种「一流专业人士」解决全职团队无法解决的问题，要么只为特定项目聘请「顶级专家」，从而节省资金。

熟词生义

在这句话中，我们同时学习两个形容词，而且这姐妹俩在句中含义相同。ultimate 常用来表示「最终的」，比如，the ultimate decision 是「最终决定；最终决定权」。此外，它还可以表示 most extreme; best, worst, greatest, most important, etc。这条释义很有意思，因为 ultimate 可以同时表示「最好的，最重要的，最大的」和「最坏的」。比如，the ultimate test 指的是「最大考验」。不过，正面的用法使用频率更高些。在文中，ultimate professionals 指的是「一流专业人士」。

Caviar and oysters on ice are generally considered the ultimate luxury foods.

人们通常认为，鱼子酱和冰镇牡蛎是顶级美味。

top-tier

这个单词在词典上没法直接查到释义，但在外刊中见到的频率不低。它常用来形容城市，我们之前在造句时有用过， top-tier cities 是「一线城市」。当它用来修饰 university, institution 等时，需要改下译文，译为「顶尖名校」。institution 此处专指「大学」，而不是其他机构。

原句给了我们另一个语境，除了形容前面这些事物外，它还可以形容人。好，现在让我们记住这个搭配，top-tier experts 「顶级专家」，和前文的 ultimate professionals 属于同义替换，我们可以用它来替换 leading, top, outstanding 等。来看《经济学人》的例句。有同学眼熟吗？

Yet their mandate for steering the firm puts top-tier financial performance and long-term growth on a par with positive social impact and trust.

extensive 大量的

extensive = abundant / a huge amount of sth

This “successor principle” is part of the foundation of our numerical cognition, but requires extensive practice to understand.

译文：这种「递增原则」虽然是我们数字认知基础的一部分，但需要大量练习才能理解。

extensive

表示「大量的」，你想到了哪个表达呢？a huge number/amount of sth？我猜，你一定厌倦了这对表达吧？那试试 extensive。但需要提前打个预防针，extensive 不能完全替代 a huge amount of sth。

extensive 常用来表示 containing or dealing with a lot of information and details「广泛的，全面的」， receive extensive coverage 是「受到全面报道」之义，我们结合 BMW 的冰淇淋事件造个句：

That BMW has landed itself in hot water in China over tubs of ice cream has received extensive coverage in the global press.

宝马因几罐冰淇淋在中国陷入困境，这件事受到了全球媒体的广泛报道。

它的另一常用义却是 large in size, amount, or degree。英文解释看上去很简单，但对应的中文释义却难以用一句话概括。首先，extensive 可表示占地面积「广阔的，宽敞的」，比如，extensive grounds「宽敞的庭院」。

其次，它可以表示「巨大的，大量的」，比如，extensive damage 是指「巨大损失」，可替换 huge/great/giant/tremendous damage 等。作者在文中使用 extensive practice 是想表达，知道原则还不够，我们还需要足够多的练习才能理解数字。我们来看《经济学人》有关神经网络的相关内容。

First, computer scientists found that once a network has learnt a task, it struggles to transfer those skills to a new one, however similar, without extensive retraining.
